Resources on Campus for Mental Health

From the perspective of a modern college student, what would you say was the most stressful point of your academic career? It’s understandable if you say it was the first grade when a bunch of seven-year-olds were running around, learning about syllables, their teeth falling out all over the place, but I doubt that’s your answer. Amidst the balance of classes, homework, athletic commitments, student organizations, part-time jobs, and internships, on top of deciding what you’re doing with the rest of your life, most broke 20-somethings don’t have time to worry about how stress is impacting their wellbeing. Regardless, it is crucial to take care of yourself, and students at KWC have access to multiple resources to do so.
Mental health counseling is a great way to destress and talk to someone who cares. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, or you just want a friend to talk to, the Counseling Services Office is available for students. Conversations are confidential, and the cost of these services are completely free. The Counseling Services Office is located in 209B in the Barnard-Jones Administration Building, or you can make an appointment by calling 270-852-3183.
If you’ve taken EXSC101 (Fitness and Wellness), then there is no doubt that you know how important being physically active is for your wellbeing. According to the CDC, physical activity can reduce your risk of developing depression and anxiety in addition to helping you sleep better. Fortunately, KWC offers free memberships for students during the school year at Owensboro’s YMCA which is less than half a mile from our campus.
A final, important note of advice for struggling students is that you don’t have to struggle alone! When the burden of your courses becomes too much and you need help, talk to your professors. All professors at Kentucky Wesleyan hold office hours and encourage students to use them. The Student Success Center in Winchester is also open to any students who need help with tutoring, learning how to study, writing support, and so much more. Simply put, there are numerous resources at Kentucky Wesleyan College to help students in their time of need. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of them!
