How to Beat the Winter Blues
March 9, 2021
This has been a very cold and snowy winter and I want to provide you with a list of different activities to do when you are stuck inside. It can be difficult to be inside for long periods of time and feel like you have nothing to do, but there are a lot of activities that will keep you occupied. Different activities to do when you are inside are include make hot chocolate and sit by the fire, binge watch a television series, read a book, cook a new recipe, or have a game night. These are all activities that will help you pass the time during a cold, snowy, winter day. I have done all of these activities over the past few months and they have all been enjoyable.
First, who doesn’t love a cup of hot chocolate topped with whip cream and mini marshmallows on a cold day? Bundle up with your hot chocolate and sit by the fire. If you don’t have a fire, bundle up with a warm blanket and sit in the coziest spot in your house. It is always nice to spend time by yourself.
Netflix and Hulu have saved my life during cold, winter days. I have binge watched so many series over the past few months and they have all been pretty good. I am going to give you a list of all the shows I have binge watched and maybe you will want to watch them too. Here is a list of shows that you may want to check out: All American, Shameless, Ozark, Breaking Bad, You, In the Dark, Big Sky, and The Undoing. Those are just a few of the shows I’ve watched over the past few months, and they were all really good. So, if you have nothing to do, turn on one of these shows. You might get hooked and not be able to stop watching.
I am not an avid reader, but I do read some. My favorite genre is mystery/thriller books. I have read a few different books over the past few months which have helped pass time and given me something to do. I enjoy reading books by James Patterson and Dean Koontz, who are popular mystery writers, so if you like mystery books, check out The Trial and The Medical Examiner.
Something else you can do is cook a new recipe. I recently cooked a new recipe that I saw on Tik Tok and it was delicious. There are also a lot of modifications you can make to the recipe as well. It is baked feta pasta and was really quick and easy. Here is the recipe in case you want to try it: a package of cherry tomatoes, ½ cup of olive oil, one block of feta cheese, a package of your favorite pasta (I used rigatoni), one garlic clove, basil, and salt and pepper. All you have to do is pour the tomatoes in a baking dish, add the block of feta in the middle of the dish, add the olive oil, salt, and pepper and bake at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes. Increase the heat to 450 degrees and bake for another 10 minutes. While that is in the oven, cook your pasta. Once the tomatoes and feta are done cooking, bring it out of the oven and use the back of a spoon to smash it into a creamy sauce. Toss in the pasta and basil. It is pretty simple and the dish was amazing. If you try it, you will not regret it.
Something else that I have done during snow days are have game nights. I love playing cards, so I have played a lot of euchre, spades, and rummy with my friends. If you do not know how to play these card games, look them up online and start playing with your friends. It is a good way to pass time and really enjoyable.
All of these activities are great to do on cold, snowy, winter days and will keep you occupied if you ever find yourself bored or feeling like you have nothing to do.
