On Monday March 23, 2021 a mass shooting took place in Boulder Colorado. The 21 year old who was accused of this horrific crime was a man by the name of Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa. He was taken into custody and charged with 10 counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted murder while he was shooting at police. This took place outside and inside of scoops grocery stores. The shooting lasted a gruesome 50 minutes as the active shooter was shot in the leg and handcuffed and walked out by authorities. In a lot of cases where we have mass shooters, they are in somewhat of a bad mental state. Something is wrong with their brain and emotions to where they do not think about their decision until it is too late. In this case, the shooter is still undergoing mental health treatment and is held with no bond and will be seen again in about 60-90 days.

The boulder community gathers by the fencing that has since been covered in flowers and stuffed animals to honor the 10 individuals who lost their life. Ranging from ages 20 to 60 the community are lost for words as they said they never thought anything like this would happen in boulder Colorado. Amongst those who were killed, a police veteran was shot in the head as he was the first one on the scene. While others ran and hid, he ran towards the shooter to try and detain him, where he was shot and killed. Father of seven, Eric Tally’s police car is now parked outside the police station where it is being used as a memorial. Hundreds of flowers and stuffed animals cover his car.

Officer Tally’s body was transferred to the funeral home Wednesday, where hundreds of law enforcement gathered alongside the roads to show their love and appreciation. Recently the federal courts of Colorado have overturned a law banning assault weapons, which is what was used in this mass shooting. The shooter bought an AR pistol that shoots 556 bullets legally from the gun store just a week before the shooting. As this is why many people see guns as weapons of mass destruction. Other people say they feel more safe with a gun alongside them, where it could possibly help them in situations like this one. Law enforcements have been battling with mass shootings for a very long time. As these type of situations are horrific and sad, the mind blowing act of murder still lingers in the air.

As the Boulder community was torn apart by this crime, they are in a way coming together and showing unconditional love to the ones who lost their life. And they say there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, as this tunnel may be pretty long and hard, this community is strong and will overcome this devastating act.
