News broke on April 9th, 2020 that former boy band, One Direction, is in the process of creating a 10-year anniversary project. Liam Payne, a former member, has confirmed that he and the other bandmates have been in contact to discuss plans to mark this millstone. The unnamed project would be set for July. One Direction is an English-Irish pop boy band who made their early start in London of 2010. The members include Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson; former member Zayn Milk left the group in 2015. In 2010, all 5 members had auditioned as solo acts for the 7th season of The X Factor, a British singing competition. During their time on The X Factor, all of the boys failed to progress in the “Boys” category, instead of quitting, they decided to team up and form the 5-piece boy band. Styles is noted for coming up with the name One Direction.
One Direction placed third in the competition, however, after the final, their song “Forever Young” was accidentally leaked to the internet. After the song was leaked, One Direction confirmed that they had been signed by Cowell to Syco Records for a recording contract. The group began recording their first album in January of 2011. The following month, a book was published titled “One Direction; Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story), licensed by One Direction. One Direction’s debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful” was released in September of 2011. It has sold over 1 million copies in the UK. This song was an instinct hit and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. In November of 2011, they signed a record deal with Columbia Records in North America. In that same month, Up All Night, their first studio album was released. After that, the group was pushed into stardom.
In March 2015, Zayn Malik left the group. The other 4 made their first appearance without Malik on The Late Late Show with James Corden in May of that year. Then, in 2016 rumors floated around about the groups possible split. By May 2017, all four members had released solo singles. By February 2018, the group had folded its touring company.
One Direction, throughout the six years together as a band, produced 5 albums together including Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015). They had 2 tours as opening acts and 4 headline tours. The group had won almost 200 awards including 4 MTV Video Music Awards, Artist of the Year, and 7 Brit Awards.
