On Friday, February 16, 2018, the first set of estimates were available for the new film Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther. Black Panther is well on its way to having a historic weekend with projected earnings at $200 million over a four day period. So far, Ryan Coolger, the director of the film, has reported a $72 million earning.

The estimates only go up from there as the film is projected to beat out Beauty and the Beast in pre-summer records, as well as DC’s Batman vs. Superman. If the numbers remain the same then the film will own the seventh best opening of all time.

This seems to be one of the best times to open the movie despite that it is not a holiday. 23% of K-12 and 9% of colleges are off today.
Records other than those are being broken by this new movie. Advance ticket sales continue to go crazy at Fandango. Black Panther is now their fourth biggest pre-sell of all time behind Star Wars, The Last Jedi and Rouge One. Fandango recently reported that Black Panther was their biggest super hero seller of all time.

Octavia Spencer fulfilled her promise and has bought out two February 17th screenings of the film in Mississippi. She made this promise in her January 31st Instagram post in which she posted about buying out some screenings in the under-served communities. She wanted to ensure that the children in these communities could see themselves as a superhero.
